Part 3

Kindness.  Since the news of our baby, we have been the recipients of so much kindness.  We got an Air Force beanie within a week of releasing the news from Anna De la Cruz, a coworker of Brian’s (Michelle’s dad).  A few weeks later we received a package in the mail from my mom and dad.

Shortly thereafter Cali (my sister) sent Michelle some fabric to make a baby blanket.  Friends in the church have been kind in:  lending Michelle a large selection of maternity clothes, giving us an exersaucer, and other baby things which we will need soon.

Immediately after finding out the gender of our baby, we received a gift and card from the Page family.  We are so grateful to all of these people for the kindness they have shown to us.

Library.  I finally got a library card here.  Both Michelle and I have enjoyed the benefits of this card.  On my first visit, I purchases a used copy of Flowers for Algernon and checked out the second book in the Hunger Games series in hopes I would be able to find the first soon.  I also checked out a few books about cooking that helped us learn some basics to working in the kitchen.  Eventually, we found all three of the Hunger Games books and devoured them.  We highly recommend them to anyone.

Matt and Medical School Interviews.  Matt and I became close friends when both of us returned to the Air Force Academy from serving missions in Taiwan in the summer of 2009.  Matt is currently in his final year at the Academy and has had three different medical school interviews in D.C. this fall.  Michelle and I have been lucky enough to host him for all three of these interviews.  He first came in the beginning of October to interview with George Washington University.  He stayed through the weekend to watch the LDS General Conference with us.  It was a good thing he was with us because we drove a little too far with the gas light on in our truck and I’m glad he was there to help me push the truck the half mile to the nearest gas station.

On his second visit later that month, he interviewed with the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences (the military medical school) in Bethesda.  The day after the interview Matt and I went rock climbing at the Great Falls National Park on the Virginia side.  While the falls aren’t exactly Niagara, it was still really pretty and a great place to climb.
It is pretty fun climbing right on the river
If it had been two weeks later, the leaves would have been gorgeous
On his third and final visit, just a few weeks ago, Matt interviewed with Georgetown University.  All three interviews went well and he has already been accepted by George Washington and USUHS.  He should hear one way or the other from Georgetown soon.  We are excited that he will be out here next year and are excited to hear what decision he will make.

Nephew.  When Michelle and I got married Michelle inherited several nieces.  Trevor and Michelle have Lacy, Niki, and Courtney; Trent has Brena and Kiara; and Abe and Grace have Clara.  One month after we got married, Ray and Cali had our first nephew, Levin.  We got to see him right after he was born but then had to leave Washington for Maryland.  We are excited to see him again in another month.  He is so cute and we are grateful for our new nephew.
Seeing Levin may or may not have helped us decide to start having kids soon

After seeing how cute he is, you can probably figure it out

2nd Installment

Golf.  We are dating our way through the alphabet.  Here is a quick rundown of all that we have done so far.  A) We carved Apples and Ate caramel Apples.  B) We went for a Barefoot Beach walk at Fenwick Island.  C) We went to the Cinema and watched The Help because Michelle had just finished reading it.  D) We went to a Dinosaur park and had a picnic.  E) We went to the temple and did an Endowment session.  F) We ate French Fries and Frosties and looked for Fabric for Family night.  G) We went Golfing (mini) in Gaithersburg and played Games.  H) We went on a Hike at Great Falls National Park (Virginia side).  I) We made milkshakes (Ice cream) because it sounded better than homemade Ice cream.  J) We went down to the Jaynes’ for the weekend and Just had a great time talking on the way there and the way back.  That’s all the farther we have made it so far.  Well, here is a picture of us mini-golfing in Gaithersburg.  They had great landscaping and a very fun course.

This was originally going to be about our hike, but then today, something else came up that is even better!  HAIR.  Today, Michelle went to give me my normal haircut and she did a GREAT job.  She was just putting a few finishing touches on the fade and decided to branch out and try using scissors.  She isn’t quite as talented with scissors as she is with the clippers yet so the result was not very pretty.  We decided it might be better to buzz it off than to have a high-and-tight.  Michelle buzzed my head to a 1.  Since it was so short anyway, I told Michelle I was going to be like my Dad and Bic it just to see what it would be like.  I now have no hair, but it should be back soon.

Insects.  We do live in a basement apartment so they are bound to come up some times.  Michelle knows that anytime I ask, “Wanna see something cool?”  She should say no or else I’ll be showing her another bug or slug.  Yes, we’ve found several slugs on our stove and I’ve even stepped on one.  That was quite a surprise!  We also enjoy regular visits from crickets that like to hang out just outside of our front door and hop in every time the door is opened.  Sometimes I find some really cool centipede like things that have really big front and back legs (like a daddy-long-legs) and little tiny middle legs.  We get occasional visits from sugar ants that are mainly just fun to watch.  Insects make Michelle a little queasy so I get the pleasure of looking at each and every one of them and then the satisfaction of squishing them.

Jaynes’.  We love living by our Jaynes’ cousins.  Rachel lives just a short 15 minutes away.  We have been treated to dinner several times at Rachel’s house as well as invited to participate in sand volleyball and many other activities and we’ve also enjoyed inviting her over to our house for dinner and games.  Rachel and I are the same age and were best friends when we were little.  She only lived a few hundred yards away and when everyone else was at school we had so many adventures.  Ever since then, I have loved spending time with Rachel.  The best part is we can do almost anything together.  During our senior year of high school Rachel came to visit us for a week or so and we got a little bored one day.  I wasn’t worried because boredom never lasts long when you are with someone as fun as Rachel.  That afternoon we created our own “I Spy” picture.  During my freshman year at the Air Force Academy, I went to visit Rachel and Aunt Marcia in Rexburg for Spring Break.  Two years ago while Rachel was getting her Masters at Eastern Washington University, she stuck around Washington for almost a full extra week of her Christmas Vacation so that she could see me.  It is so nice that to see each other now we don’t have to go to extreme lengths.  We just have to go for a short drive.

Levi, Abe, and I grew up doing everything together.  Levi, Emily, Andy, and Addie are only 2 ½ hours away in Tappahannock, VA.  A week and a half ago, Michelle and I went down visit them.  We have loved learning how to parent from Levi and Emily.  They have been very kind and allowed us to practice a little bit with their two kids, Andy and Addie.  Andy is almost two years old and is so cute.  Addie is darling.  She is just over six weeks old and it was fun for Michelle and me to get to interact with a new baby.  It makes us so excited to be parents soon ourselves.  Apart from getting to play with the kids, Levi also taught me how to change oil in a car and we attempted to fix their lawnmower (couldn’t get a replacement part).  Levi and I also schemed up a project to complete during Thanksgiving.  We’ll have to wait and see if the project comes into fruition.

We look forward to their future trips up here to attend the temple because that means we get to see them and sometimes help babysit.  We also look forward to spending a Thanksgiving filled with football, projects, and turkey with them.

I’m so grateful that two of my best childhood friends have done such a good job keeping me in their life even if we lived in different states.  I’m also grateful that we no longer have to live so far apart and that we see each other regularly.

Ketchup

You’ll never guess what happened to us today!  We woke up and noticed that the cows had come home, pigs were flying, and we even heard that hell had frozen over—that could only mean one thing—we need to write a blog.

Michelle has been kindly waiting for me to write a blog before she writes again and I promised many, many times to do so but am just now getting to it.  I don’t know of a better way to catch up than to give you a whole alphabet worth of our life.

Apartment.  No pictures because at this moment, the house isn’t real tidy.  So, you get to read my descriptive writing. J  First, when you enter our front door (if you can get it to open because the humidity changes sometimes make it quite difficult) you will be greeted by so much wood, you feel like you are inside the Keebler elves’ tree house.  The walls are real wood.  I wouldn’t call it paneling, but more like contoured slats that fit snugly to each other.  In most places you won’t be able to see the wall though because there are so many built in cabinets (also made of wood).  The ceiling is made of one foot square fake wood panels.  Each has ridges running along it in one direction and the ridges on the panels are placed perpendicular to each other so that they create a giant checker pattern across the whole ceiling.  The ceiling is about seven feet high, except for where the air ducts and other random pipes come lower.  Don’t worry though; we can’t see any of them because they are covered in the same paneling as the ceiling.  We have a few secret doors in the wall, one is access to the water main and the other is our closet (it is only a little secret though because it has a handle and visible hinges).  Our table is solid wood that is about the same color as the walls and has matching chairs and a bench.  Our coffee table is about the same color and is fake wood.  That pretty much covers the wood in the main room.

The floor is primarily burnt orange tile with a large rectangle outlined in green tiles.  Oh, there is one white wall in this room that separates it from the master bedroom.  We know it was added later because they built it right into one of the cabinets.  We will never be able to open that cabinet door (unless we knock down the wall).  Michelle has done a great job decorating.  We have a picture of Christ and a framed Family:  Proclamation to the World (gift of the Osborne’s) on one wall and a patriotic wall that has pictures of Lincoln, Washington, flags (gifts of Jaynes’) and one of me in uniform.  She has filled all of the little shelves with pictures, books, and other random items.  We have a “Special” plate (thanks to Joe and Ande) next to the table.  Oh, the light switch for the room is also about 30 feet away from the door back in a corner behind the table, so we have a little lamp we can turn on when we walk in the door.  Oh, we also have a love seat adorned with an Air Force Academy blanket (gift of Grace and Abe) and some pillows from the Van Tassel’s.

I’m tired of describing and you are probably tired of reading, so I’ll just take some pictures of the rest of the house when we have cleaned up a little more.

Baby.  We just passed 18 weeks!  That means, we only have 8 more days until we find out the gender of baby Payne.  We are excited to get another ultrasound.  On our last ultrasound in September, we got to hear the baby’s heartbeat and we discovered our offspring was for all intents and purposes a cinnamon bear!
10 Week Ultrasound
Apparently our baby likes to change shapes a lot because since we discovered he or she was a cinnamon bear, he/she has morphed into a cumquat, fig, lime, medium shrimp, lemon, apple avocado, turnip, onion, and a pickle.  We’re not sure how this works, but we sure are excited to see what is next.  Any guesses?

Church.  Michelle told you a few months ago about our responsibility to teach a class to high schoolers (Seminary) online.  Well, it is happening.  We meet three times a week and love teaching.  It is so much harder to do online but we are learning and hopefully getting better.  A few weeks ago, we had two students on the same day for the first time and it was quite the experience.  Student #1 didn’t turn on his webcam because it was slowing his computer down too much.  Student #2 had video of us, but for some reason, his audio was not working so he couldn’t hear us and we couldn’t hear him.  While one of us was carrying on a conversation with Student #1 about Adam and Eve, the other was using instant messaging to keep Student #2 involved.  Good thing we had both of us there!  Since that time, we have changed our meeting time to the afternoon to better accommodate the student’s schedules and we have really enjoyed getting to know the students.  We also love working with and learning from the other Seminary teachers in the Stake and the CES Supervisor for the area.  They do a great job and make our calling fun and easy.

We love our ward.  Everyone has been so kind to us since we moved in.  We have been invited over for dinner or for some other activity by so many couples and families who have been so generous and fun.  We have been given baby stuff, yeast, hand me down maternity clothes, and we've found workout partners.  We love the friendships we have already made and look forward to strengthening them and building new ones in the years to come.

Dishes.  Michelle and I have tried to invite people over for dinner once or twice a month for Sunday dinner.  We usually experiment and try to make something completely new so the kitchen turns into a big disaster and it is never cleaned up before we eat.  By the time people leave, we usually have lost all motivation so we do the unthinkable and leave the mess until Monday morning.  It always makes getting started on chores on Monday morning so much worse.

Electronics.  With Michelle doing online school, we decided we needed a new computer for her to use and one for me to have for my school.  We went against our better judgment and bought an HP because they had risen to the top of the market.  We’re not sure how they got there because the computer was a joke and we hated it.  Luckily Costco has a great return policy so we started looking for a Toshiba online to replace it.  Michelle ordered one and then about a week later they emailed to say they didn’t have any in stock.  She ordered from about 5 different places with the same results until one of the companies told her that the computer was no longer in production so her chances of finding any in stock anywhere were pretty slim.  Michelle ordered a similar computer through that company over the phone where the sales rep promised her they had plenty in stock.  We woke up the next day to an email that informed us the order was cancelled because they were out of stock.  In the end, that was a mistake and the company sent us two computers but only billed us for one.  We called the company and they had no records showing that two had been shipped.  Now we have to figure out how to get it back to the company.  Well, to make a long story short, it has been an adventure getting a computer that works.

Finances.  Michelle and I just completed our first successful month of strictly following a budget and keeping track of every penny we spent.  It feels great to know exactly where all of our money went.  We finally have a system in place that seems to work for us and are so proud of ourselves that we thought we needed to share it with everyone!
